Alright microphone Check 1 Two what is this? It's the den of Heads podcast right before Christmas.

00:17

Wow. Oh wow.

00:20

Exactly,

00:21

Yeah, this

00:22

that's

00:22

is.

00:22

how you start.

00:23

That's how you start a podcast. I'm kinda, I'm kinda intimidated right now. You know I have to follow up to this.

00:32

That's alright, so I'm Pasha.

00:34

I'm Dariush.

00:35

And yeah, welcome to the first episode of denim Heads. The denim heads and. You know we had, why did we do this darish?

00:48

Whi

00:49

That's a lot of questions, why how?

00:50

it's yeah so many questions OK why? There's a mutual interest in Denham, definitely. Um, I think if we only go back to let's say two years, two years ago or one year ago, two years ago. First of all, let's let's tell everybody that we communicate a lot via WhatsApp audio. We send each other audios multiple times a day talking about cars, music, cigars, denim. What else watch is?

01:34

Certainly.

01:34

And just and just life in general. But recently everything's been leading to Denham. Progressively, it's been becoming really 90% denim talk in 10% of life pandemic and the rest. I

01:57

ETC

01:57

think

01:57

etc

01:58

it's

01:58

yeah.

01:58

red cetera. So basically this mutual interest in Denham when the pandemic started. We find ourselves we found ourselves having more time to exchange and. And talk about this and I guess we just thought that you know why, not just.

02:20

Put it on the wax.

02:21

Put it on wax exactly, so that's what we're doing now, and there's a love for denim. There's a big interests in the podcast world. Obviously. So it was only right that we that we, you know, give it a try basically, and since we do it this way, this time, let's let's let's go back also and maybe would you like to let us know how it all started for you? This this interest for Denham.

02:55

Yeah, I think I've always loved jeans and denim. It goes all the way back to like the third grade where I saw Kris Kross jump jump video and they were wearing their jeans backwards. I went to school the next day at lasted about 40 minutes. I got my pants. I had my pants on backwards for 40 minutes and then the teacher took me into the bathroom, pinched my ear and told me I had to put my pants on the correct way and so that was that. And then

03:32

Tough

03:32

the following

03:33

love.

03:33

year. Next, the following year or two I remember going to Canal Street in Chinatown, New York City. Picking up some trying to pick up some caulk and I purple jeans because that was the in thing and. You know, FUBU little later on and bossen.

03:53

Yep.

03:55

You know it was. It was an interesting journey. Fast forward to about a year ago chatting with you and talking about. Hi gentlemen, sort of brand out in Wales.

04:10

Yep.

04:11

And how it's something that they do exclusively. What is there?

04:17

Do one thing well.

04:19

Exactly so that was their one thing so.

04:22

Yep.

04:23

I join the no wash club. I picked up a pair of or join the Wash Club. Went for about 9 months without washing raw denim which was like Cardboard,

04:35

Yes.

04:35

hard as heck. So now we're here. I mean, we figured listening to some of these denim centric podcasts a little intimidating and you know these are. There's a lot of an abundance of information out there, and it could be a little daunting, I think,

04:54

Yes.

04:54

but I think you and I sort of started the journey together at the Ground Zero at rock bottom and. While we're nowhere near. What what could we say? We know we're only scratching the surface at this point.

05:12

Yes,

05:13

We

05:13

really.

05:13

thought it's a good idea to maybe. Record this and make this like sort of an inviting safe space for other potential. Denham heads to sort of congregate and. We all kind of follow along.

05:30

Yes, definitely, and this is in no way a knock to existing podcast 'cause you might have said it. This is by the way I think we have to be very honest and give Full disclosure. This is the third time we're recording this, so we might have said it in another. On on the previous versions, but we've been listening to some of the these podcasts and they've been really inspiring. They've helped me the about you also. I guess to increase the knowledge, but it's true that sometimes we felt a little bit intimidated because some of these guys have been in this. In this hobby dispassion this business, for some of them for so long that there's a vocabulary, there's a way of talking about it that you know we're not there yet. So. I think it's it's really interesting for us to create this space as you said. Hum. But yeah, I think it's it's a nice experience and maybe I will just also give a quick go

06:36

Yeah,

06:36

back also.

06:36

what what was? How did your journey start? How did you get to this point? Wanting to record a podcast

06:43

Yeah.

06:43

about Denham.

06:45

Um?

06:45

In the middle of the week.

06:47

In the middle of the week, definitely, uh, so. It also started maybe around the same time as you crisscross. I wasn't brave enough to go to school and wear jeans backwards, but I was definitely there when you know people were wearing those super baggy jeans, the foobooz, the car can eyes and everything. So that's how I got into it. I didn't know at the time, but of course, but I always kept an interest in. An interest in jeans and stuff like this then it was, you know brands like diesel or 7 for all mankind, that type of stuff. And Fast forward to maybe 10 years ago. ago. 11 years ago. No more actually. Maybe 15 years ago, and I saw this picture of Kanye West wearing a super. Dark blue jeans that look kind of different, and the caption, said Kenny West. Going into the APC store in Paris, so from at that time I was like OK I need to know more about this. I need to investigate 'cause. First of all, it's Kanye West. It was an error of Kanye West that we can all agree that was Connie's. Best era, maybe? Musically speaking so. I had to dig into this APC thing and that was also at the time where I came to visit you in New York and we went to that to that store on Mercer St.

08:28

Yeah a PC,

08:29

Yeah,

08:29

yeah.

08:29

a PC, and so that's how I discovered. That's the first time I discovered raw denim. How uncomfortable it is, how much of a challenge it is to break in those jeans, especially APC. Actually, even now knowing all the other brands that that I know of, but APC is still amongst one of the hardest denim that I've come across. But at the time.

08:55

Do we know the way actually

08:57

No,

08:57

side?

08:57

I don't even know to be honest. It

08:59

That's

08:59

wasn't

08:59

now

09:00

super,

09:00

a thing where

09:00

yeah.

09:00

we need to know the weight of how many ounces

09:03

Yeah.

09:03

is it? Is it feels like it's probably like in that 18 to 20 range.

09:08

I'm not, you know, I'm not even sure it's just the fabric felt so hard, but I'm not sure it was that heavy. For some reason I don't know. I'll check. We definitely have to check that. It was just that the cut was obviously super tight and at the time whenever you would look into that type of jeans. Everywhere I read about it and even on the APC website, they would tell you you have to buy at least one size smaller from what you usually wear. So buying one size smaller would make them super uncomfortable, super tight and. It was it was it was. It was a challenge at the time, but I was. I was motivated. It was real. You know, I committed to one pair at least and could break them in. You still have yours if I recall.

10:07

Can I actually ended up purchasing because of how passionate you are? And I'm like man, this guy is coming from Switzerland and all he keeps talking about this pair of jeans must be something about them. So

10:19

Yep.

10:20

I ended up picking up a pair. And yeah, it's I got him eight years ago in 2012.

10:27

And I still have a man. There are a workhorse pair of jeans.

10:30

Yeah, definitely. I'm I didn't care at the time so I got rid of him when I really couldn't wear them anymore. 'cause, you know, I basically probably got bigger. But I wish I'd kept them just for the sake of having them. 'cause I'm definitely

10:48

Yeah, it's

10:49

buying

10:49

a relic

10:49

now

10:49

of

10:49

and

10:50

sorts.

10:50

in different

10:50

It's.

10:50

way. Yeah, it's a relic, definitely.

10:52

It's one of the first you know high end pairs of denim

10:56

Oh

10:56

one

10:56

yes.

10:56

can get.

10:57

Yeah, yeah, definitely. Um, so that's how it started and Fast forward again a few years after that. And it's, you know, 2020, 2019-2020 and I came across. Hi, it's also. That's by browsing on Instagram. Basically looking at different brands, different accounts, talking about brands that I really had no idea of. You know. Talking about secret denim and stuff like this, I had no idea what it was. All those different cuts. Those different fabrics. 13 ounces 18 ounces relaxed, tapered tight, tapered. I had no idea this whole thing was it was kind of, you know, daunting 'cause I had no idea where it was and I was just looking. I wanted to get back into the raw denim thing but I needed something that was slimmer than what you can usually find in those brands and that's how I came across highlights. This little brands from Wales and. I have actually in one of those podcasts that I listen to. I've heard that the brand is producing those those denim in a factory that was at the time used. To produce jeans for a Marks and Spencer if I'm not

12:21

Alright,

12:22

mistaking, yeah, yeah.

12:23

OK.

12:25

So there's a whole story behind the brand we can. We will talk about it later on, but yeah, it's an interesting story. So that's how I got into. I got back into raw denim and that's had at this time. I also told you about it, so we both order one and join the No Wash Club. An interesting experience.

12:50

I think it's mostly another reason was because of the pandemic. Now of course

12:54

Yes.

12:55

there was a lot of bad that came with it, but with good I guess it was time and it changed the shopping experience too because you really couldn't go into the stores and you. Ended up relying upon like just basically information that's out. That's posted up on these.

13:15

Websites, shopping websites and you know you looking at what's the one denim you

13:20

The

13:20

is

13:21

name yo

13:21

that

13:21

yeah.

13:21

yeah, that one there's.

13:24

Oklahoma.

13:24

There's a OK arm addendum or something like that. Oh DI think they call it.

13:30

Yeah, and then we ended up having to have to purchase and. Some, we ended up seeing that you have to really pay attention to the measuring guide the the

13:40

Yes,

13:40

size charts

13:41

the

13:41

because.

13:41

size chart.

13:43

Know what may you might be a 32 one brand or not even 32 one particular cut. You're not a 32 and it doesn't translate to

13:55

The.

13:55

the same sizing,

13:56

The.

13:56

which is a very weird thing. But I guess it really. It's interesting because it just shows how. Almost. Unique each pieces. Each piece of denim because it's. It's a one of one in many ways. You know it's not a cookie cutter approach, and I think it just makes it goes to show how unique each piece is and how each.

14:26

How much care is on

14:27

Definitely.

14:27

his hand made? There's there's a level of human error as close to perfection as they make it. There is still a little bit of human error, and

14:35

Yep.

14:35

it's actually those little.

14:40

Mrs, let's call it

14:41

Yeah.

14:41

Witcher kind of make it even cooler

14:44

Hi,

14:44

in

14:44

it makes

14:44

special.

14:44

it super interesting and. I mean, you're right, the level of of details and the fact that it's all handmaids you know. It's yet it's. There's a word I'm looking for right now that I can't find.

14:59

Spoke.

15:00

We spoke and I wanted to say handcrafts notha

15:05

Yeah,

15:06

the.

15:06

I mean there is that. It's it's really. It starts off by hand and then you know you have these roar pairs of denim and you know that fade pattern is unique to you and so just

15:19

Definitely.

15:19

as well, it just truly becomes. A way to become more of an individual, I guess, and that's

15:26

Yes.

15:27

another problem I think you know, speaking in a grand. Grander tone, it's just like you know, how do use one becoming an individual these days, and with

15:37

Yes.

15:37

everything

15:38

15:38

starting to sort

15:39

I've

15:40

of

15:40

read and heard some

15:41

homogeneous.

15:41

things. Yeah, totally totally. I've read this thing. Or maybe I heard it somewhere. I don't want to take credit for that, but I've heard somebody say that those denim, raw denim and everything the fades you know it's interesting 'cause you're supposed to wear them basically all the time and what it does is it records your life. Basically those fades are witnesses of the joys of life to the moments you you live

16:14

Battle

16:14

with them,

16:14

scars,

16:15

the battle

16:15

they're like

16:15

scars,

16:15

battle scars.

16:16

exactly. So, and it's something that's becoming becoming.

16:24

A little bit more rare everyday in this era of, you know, buying, quick, consuming, throwing. Throwing stuff away. Those those goods, those the craftsmanship that goes into these. These jeans, it's it's it's. It's a testament to a certain lifestyle and attention to detail and everything so. Yeah, it's definitely something special.

16:52

And I think that's another thing that a lot of us, both of us I should say, and maybe a lot of the listeners will sort of resonate with is the idea of. You know there is still some finer things like the.

17:09

Yeah, I. I think it just makes. Yeah, it makes sense that a lot of us would sort of identify with something that's so niche

17:19

Yeah.

17:20

and. There's so many intricacies within Denham and the denim industry, I should say. So many. Yeah, it's just it's nice. The level of care and detail and such that

17:34

Definitely.

17:35

people care.

17:37

Yeah. What can people? What can people expect from this podcast?

17:47

Well, I think. Just the trials and tribulations

17:52

Yeah.

17:52

of of navigating

17:54

That's correct.

17:55

through the Denham Our love of Denham especially in this point in time in history. I think you know when we see new drops and cuts and such. Will certainly try to comment on 'em.

18:09

Yes. I think also we will try and an explain a few things that we. Found found out about or that we researched ourselves. I know when we recorded this earlier, we talked about the Osaka 5. When I started reading stuff about raw denim online, you come across different blogs, different pages, different people, doing pictures, doing reviews, doing all kinds of stuff, and you hear about Osaka five. You hear about the Japanese brands, the American brands, how it all started and everything. So I guess sometimes we also do a bit of research ourselves and try to not. I don't want to try to simplify, but try to explain stuff. Some important points, some important things that happen within this industry and. How it became what it is now. I think we will try and sometimes develop those and do maybe some type of review. We have a few pairs ourselves. We can always talk about that, although this is so personal, it's hard to tell. You know other people. I like this because this is how it feels. But you know sizing is different for everybody, so it's this is more complicated. But as you said, different drops. Something we learn pretty quickly is that these brands do a lot of collaborations with different shops on different markets. So.

19:47

Yeah,

19:48

There are

19:48

with

19:48

a lot of

19:48

different

19:48

different

19:49

markets,

19:49

models.

19:49

different shops, different movie houses, there's like a Batman collaboration with

19:56

Yeah.

19:56

like Batman and Harley Quinn and Bane

20:00

Yep.

20:00

with another denim brand. Sort of. There's that there's. You know, I don't know. I want to say that we'll certainly not planning or hoping to become a resource for for other people. We know we're just going to sort of let the. Let the content will navigate us as

20:23

Yes.

20:23

opposed to us navigating and directing the content, I

20:28

Yes.

20:29

think. The content is is Denham and we'll see where that takes us and that's what this is going to be. Just sort of like an exploration.

20:37

Definitely.

20:37

Through things and you know, if we notice in one podcast, there's something that the two of us have an interest in. I think that will probably dictate what's the next episode, and that is. For example, I think for us we're thinking. To do a deeper dive into who and what is the Osaka 5?

21:02

Yes.

21:02

Just to you know. Again, we're not. I don't think either one of us is planning on you know, diving into the. Denim industry to, you know, close up our day jobs. Finish up our day jobs and

21:15

No,

21:15

going.

21:15

not yet. No, no, of course. I

21:19

Yeah.

21:19

think it's just a nice way for us to, as you said, we're just going to document. The way we navigate through this this this hobby this this rabbit hole that became a hobby basically.

21:34

And

21:34

Yeah.

21:34

and basically why you asked this question before? But why a podcast? I just think it's it's a. It's an amazing way to create content and to be very, very honest. It was something that personally I wanted to try once creating content via voice. And you know why podcasting? I think it's an interesting way to do it. You have a lot of, of course, YouTube channels. Instagram accounts so many people doing Podcast 2 and then you know I thought it was a nice way for for us to try and see in document all those discussions. Those messages. This pictures we exchange about denim. I think it fits.

22:24

I think so. I think you know we've. We've noticed in our very brief.

22:33

In our very brief encounters with people in the Denham world, let's say they've all been extremely welcoming. And you certainly have an abundance of information and very happy to share it. So for example, I don't know if you can hear my Saint Bernard snoring in the background 200 pounds with his deviated

22:56

Yeah.

22:57

septum. I think. Yeah, I think we've just sort of. Why is because? There's a lot to talk about, and I think it's kind of nice to sort of chit chat about this. We've we've seen how are lot of our conversations over the past year or so almost always end up seem to end up talking about denim, so

23:21

Yes.

23:21

we figured, why not, you know, make something a little bit more formal and official.

23:28

Yes.

23:28

And also just to invite other people to chit chat with us? I mean, we're hoping to have a conversation so.

23:36

Yes.

23:38

For those that are listening, you can always email us at the denim heads@gmail.com.

23:45

Thedenhamheadsplural@gmailgmail.com

23:49

you know we welcome any feedback, questions, comments, anything? We know it.

23:57

Yeah, we're

23:57

Will

23:57

open

23:58

sort of.

23:58

to discussion and I will. I will also. Take this occasion to mention my IG account. So I've created a little denim. A little page dedicated to Tidenham so people will can also find us there. It's called obviously blue, so that's obviously_blue.

24:23

That's where you can find us for now on on IG. If this

24:28

24:29

thing.

24:29

feel like you should have changed that. Obviously_indigo 'cause that's a lot more appropriate.

24:34

Nice.

24:36

Yeah.

24:36

I wanted the word blue somehow. Indigo is yeah.

24:41

It's

24:41

Well,

24:41

much more.

24:42

we'll see. We'll see it again and it's easy to change an

24:46

Of

24:47

24:47

course.

24:47

have for now as 70 followers so you know it's.

24:50

Do you really?

24:51

Yeah.

24:52

Wow lowkey, I didn't even expect that.

24:55

You see, impressive, right?

24:57

70 followers you're not following. 7070 people are following you.

25:01

Yes.

25:02

That's that's impressive, given that you just put it together

25:05

Yes,

25:05

and it's so

25:06

and.

25:06

low key.

25:07

Exactly, it's anonymous and I've posted 3 pictures up until now, so

25:13

Really, I knew

25:14

yeah.

25:14

too. OK, so

25:15

Oh

25:15

you got a third

25:15

yeah,

25:16

one

25:16

you

25:16

in

25:16

haven't

25:16

there.

25:16

seen the last one.

25:17

No.

25:17

It's a night I'll send it to you.

25:19

Cool.

25:20

It's a nice one.

25:24

Yeah.

25:24

And I guess I'm at no will.

25:27

I guess on that note, I guess we can. We can wrap it up.

25:31

Yeah, until maybe the next episode. Or

25:35

Yes, definitely.

25:36

likely the next recording, which will probably be in another hour or two because we forgot to record this one.

25:42

Let's hope not. Let's hope

25:44

OK,

25:44

not. I'm going to.

25:45

fair

25:45

I'm going to

25:45

enough.

25:46

check if if something went wrong I'm going to go right to sleep.

25:51

OK.

25:51

OK, so thank you everybody for listening to this first episode. And will will see you very soon.

26:02

Yeah, take

26:03

OK,

26:03

care everyone.

26:04

take care, stay safe.

26:05

Stay safe.
